The practice of detoxification has been touted for centuries by cultures around the world, promoting the healthy notions of cleansing, resting, and nourishing the body – from the inside out. Through the removal of toxins and the introduction of plenty of beneficial nutrients, a regular detox can be an important part of ensuring you are protected from disease and enjoying optimum health.

This process involves removing impurities from the blood – eliminating toxins from the liver, kidneys, intestines, lungs, lymphatic system, and skin. Detox can help address a number of physical concerns, including fatigue, irritated skin, allergies, bloating, mental confusion, menstrual issues, and even low-grade infections.

If you’re dealing with some of these issues, there are some great natural ways to detoxify your body that can get you on track to feeling better.

  1. Get some exercise.

Not only a good sweat a great way to eliminate toxins through your pores, exercise works to stimulate your circulation – meaning your blood will be flowing more effectively and enabling your body’s systems to all work faster and stronger.

By breathing deeper and more heavily, your lungs also get a bit of a work out when you exercise – which also helps contribute to the detoxification process by allowing you to absorb more oxygenated air. Your cells will thank you for the time you spend at the gym.

  1. Spend time in steam.

You can also get your sweat on in a steam shower or in the sauna after a workout, to double up on the detox benefits you get from pushing harmful toxins out through your pores. This process also helps increase your metabolism, hydrate your body’s mucous membranes, and even helps relieve some of the discomforts associated with arthritis, allergies, and asthma.

If you have access to a steam room or sauna at a spa or gym, take advantage of it! If you don’t and you’d like to add this detox method to your daily routine, consider using a bowl of hot water and trapping steam in with a towel draped over your head. Or, better yet, think about installing a steam shower in your own home.

  1. Drink more water.

Flushing your system is an important part of detox, so upping your daily water intake is key. However, there are tons more benefits to be gained from drinking more water. It will boost your metabolism, keep your skin clear, reduce bloating, and help your body filter out harmful toxins.

Aim for at least eight glasses each day, around two litres. Try drinking a glass of water before and after each meal.

  1. Practice stress reduction techniques.

Stress can cause a lot of toxins to accumulate inside your body, and can lead to a number of health issues. During a detox, try to find ways to eliminate sources of stress or discover healthier ways to deal with the stress you already have in your life. Things like meditating, yoga, reading, writing, or practicing a hobby are great ways to help relax your body and your mind.

If you can reduce the buildup of toxins in your body by implementing mitigation techniques, you’ll have a much easier time with future detox efforts.

  1. Focus on your diet.

Cut out processed foods, caffeine, sugar – anything that isn’t natural, organic, and healthy. Spend this time increasing your intake of healthy, nutrient-rich foods like fruits and vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats, and drinking plenty of water and green tea. Stick to the outside edges of the grocery store to eat as naturally as possible.

You might even find that you enjoy the clean eating aspect of your detox – so stick with it and remove those harmful foods from your diet in the long term. Hopefully, you’ll be able to avoid accumulating toxins inside your body by maintaining a healthy diet and living in a way that promotes your overall well-being.

These will give you a head start in your detoxification practice, but please note that if these tips cause your symptoms to worsen or continue, you might need to consider discussing your concerns with a health care professional. You’ll be able to work with them to come up with a natural solution to manage your symptoms and continue with your regular detox as a health and wellness supplement.
