I’ve recently delved back into my 90’s RnB music collection and pulled out classics from artists such as Aaliyah, Ashanti and Brandy to name but a few. There’s just something about music from that era that leaves you with that sense of nostalgia. However, I was able to put those tracks away for a time over the weekend after being sent the beautiful track ‘Mine’ by UK based songstress Cheryll Music.

On Thursday morning, the 20th of July, Chester Bennington who was the lead frontman for Linkin Park was found dead in his apartment. It has been revealed that he committed suicide by hanging himself. As news started to spread, fans of Linkin Park, celebrities and close friends began to pay their respects. Chester’s bandmates also took to Twitter to express their shock at the news.

Could ‘Pussy Powah’ by Afro-Latina recording artist and poet Nitty Scott be the female empowerment track of the year? I think the answer is a massive YES! I pressed play on this track and was subsequently blown away by the powerful visuals and impact filled message. Women too often are made to feel embarrassed for embracing their sexuality, Nitty Scott shouts from the roof tops that being a woman and a woman of colour is powerful and our biggest strength is our sexual indentity. In society, the image of sexual black woman has been scorned and looked at as animalistic but the message is firm in ‘Pussy Powah’, now is the time that black women freely express themselves and exude their right to feel sexually liberated.
