Could ‘Pussy Powah’ by Afro-Latina recording artist and poet Nitty Scott be the female empowerment track of the year? I think the answer is a massive YES! I pressed play on this track and was subsequently blown away by the powerful visuals and impact filled message. Women too often are made to feel embarrassed for embracing their sexuality, Nitty Scott shouts from the roof tops that being a woman and a woman of colour is powerful and our biggest strength is our sexual indentity. In society, the image of sexual black woman has been scorned and looked at as animalistic but the message is firm in ‘Pussy Powah’, now is the time that black women freely express themselves and exude their right to feel sexually liberated.

As Nitty says herself…

“Pxxsy Powah is a radical call to respect for the portal. Women’s sexuality, (Black and Brown) has always been overpoliced and redefined throughout history, usually by people who are neither black nor woman. But today, we’re owning and liberating ourselves as sexual beings. This video is for all my sisters in the revolt, as well as the feminist voices I’ve learned from over time”

But who is this #PowerWoman? Before I heard this track, I was not aware that Nitty has come a long way since her breakthrough at the 2011 BET Hip-Hop Awards. She contributed to the score for the Paramount Pictures film Zoolander 2 as well as becoming the official SPRITE P.O.U.R artist and the face of the Miller Lite Kickback Series.

So why is ‘Pussy Powah’ got such a strong message? what point does Nitty have to prove?

Nitty: “When I first entered the industry, I was afraid of being hypersexualized (and therefore unintelligent) that I hid any expression of sexuality at all. I no longer believe or reinforce those ideas in my image or my work. I don’t have to prove to you that I’m not a black female stereotype. Internalizing the idea that one is either a Madonna or a whore was problematic and the most suppressive time in my life. But I no longer believe or reinforce those ideas in my image or my work – I don’t have to prove that I’m not a black female stereotype. Overcoming the fear of sexist judgement related to what I do with my own body: now that’s pussy power’.

I couldn’t honestly say it any better. Now this hot talent has been brought to my attention, I can’t wait to see what else she brings out. Until then, watch the full video exclusive to In-spire LS Magazine. Nitty is the epitome of female empowerment and the modern day feminist movement at its finest and ‘Pussy Powah’ is one track you shouldn’t fall asleep on.
