Wayne Rooney scored on his return to the England team to give them a 1 – 0 victory which secured their place in the quarter finals of Euro 2012 but it was a rough passage eased by controversy and luck again Ukraine. Roy Hodgson restored Rooney to his line up, after a two match suspension in place of Liverpool Striker Andy Carroll with the task of firing England into the quarter-finals and also make his mark on the campaign.
After missing a first half header, Rooney made amends just after half time with a header just inside the penalty area which ensured England topped Group D and set a quarter-final clash with Italy on Sunday in Kiev.
